The first sitting of the House of Councillors will take place on Sunday 18th March 2018, at 2100 GMT. The Chancellor will chair the sitting up until the new Presiding Officer is returned.
The first matters before the House will be—
- the election of the Presiding Officer; - the nomination of a First Secretary; - the election of Senators; - the appointment of an Independent National Ombudsman - the setting of salaries for the Chancellor, the Secretaries of State, the Advocate-General, Councillors, Senators and judges.
The Senate will hopefully meet immediately after the election of Senators.
Following this, it is important that—
- the First Secretary appoints the other Secretaries of State and an Advocate-General, and those Secretaries of State appoint the relevant Directors; - the Senate elects a Convenor and nominates a number of other judges.
The Presiding Officer and Convenor may choose to appoint Deputes.
If a Councillor does not expect to be present for the first sitting, they may nominate themselves in advance by contacting me. They may also provide a prepared speech.
